OFCCR on 20th January 2020: Short Term Course on “Protection of On-Shore and Off-Shore Facilities against Corrosion in the Coastal Region”

 

CSIR- Institute Minerals and Materials Technology, Bhubaneswar & South Eastern Region Pipelines, Indian Oil Corporation Ltd. jointly organized a 5-day Course on “Protection of On-Shore and Off-Shore Facilities against Corrosion in the Coastal Region” from 20-24th January 2020 at CSIR-IMMT Campus, Bhubaneswar. The inaugural program conducted on 20th Jan and attended by around 300 relevant scientific and technical personnel from different parts of the country. Prof. Suddhasatwa Basu, Director, CSIR-IMMT, welcomed the participants and reiterated that CSIR-IMMT would continue to enhance partnership with Industries to address the scientific problems related to corrosion assessment and mitigation among other solutions. The co-organizers from IOCL, Mr. P.C. Choubey, ED, SERP, IOCL, Mr. A.K. Tiwary, ED, Pipeline Div., IOCL, and Mr. J.P. Sinha, ED, ERPL, IOCL pointed out the scientific aspects of corrosion in pipelines carrying water, natural gas, and crude oil. They also highlighted the economics of corrosion mitigation from a national perspective and the capabilities and roles of IOCL and CSIR-IMMT in the same. The course convener Dr. A.K. Chaubey stated about the genesis of the programme and introduced the course content. The Chief Guest of the event Mr. Subrat Tripathy, COO, Dhamra Port Company Ltd., delivered the inaugural address. He emphasized the importance of this tailor-made convergence of academia and industry at CSIR-IMMT would serve to understand the national context of coastal infrastructure maintenance. Its requirements with special focus on the critical corrosion-related problems of the national facilities & assets such as pipelines, offshore platforms, vessels, underwater cables, and civil structures. The co-convener Dr. Sisir Mantry concluded the event with a vote of thanks to the guests. The event continued with lectures from eminent resource persons such as Prof. O.N. Mohanty, RSB group, Prof. E.S. Dwarakadasa, IISc Bangalore, and so on.

The valedictory program was conducted on 24th January. Prof. S. Basu, Director CSIR-IMMT, welcomed the Chief guest and stressed the importance of this course and their benefit to the participants. The chief guest of the event, Mrs. Aparajita Sarangi, Hon’ble Member of Parliament, Govt. of India, appreciated the conglomeration of academia and industry through this technical course. She insisted that more such events should be taken up by relevant scientific bodies to impart technical personnel with knowledge and skills at the highest level. Mr. Vikas, CGM, IOCL pointed out that IOCL and CSIR-IMMT, through this course, has strived to make a huge difference in the approach of the trained personnel in the industry. The course convener Dr. A.K. Chaubey summarized the five days’ activity, and Co-convener Dr. S. Mantry thanked the participants for their response and eagerness to learn and update their knowledge.
