Skill Development Program on Basic Skills for Environmental Analysis (BSEA-1) From 11th - 13th March 2019

Environment & Sustainability department, CSIR-Institute of Minerals and Materials Technology, Bhubaneswar with NABL accredited Environmental Chemical Lab (ECL) and Environmental Biological Labs (EBL) imparted “Basic Skills for Environmental Analysis” (BSEA-1) training to mainly science graduate and post graduate students during 11th -13th March, 2019. Total 21 trainees with diverse academic background like MSc. Environmental Science, BSc. Chemistry & Geology etc. attended the program.

On first day during the inauguration Prof. S Basu, Director, CSIR-IMMT, Bhubaneswar highlighted about the needs of hands on skill regarding various environmental analysis with accuracy and precision. Also, Dr. Siddarth Pradhan, co-ordinator, Skill Development also highlighted the importance of such programmes.

During the three days training, the trainees acquired basic knowledge and various dimensions of environmental analysis like air, water, soil and microbiological parameters. Dr. Trupti Das, Dr. M G Sujana, Dr. A K Yadav, Dr. Manish Kumar and Dr. Sony Pandey delivered basic lectures on specific environmental analysis related to Air, Water, Soil and Microbiology. After the basic knowledge dissemination, the second day demonstrated the skills related to environmental sample collection and sample preparation. Lecture regarding chemical reagent preparation for water analysis and ICP-OES by Dr. P Chattopadhyay, Ex-Scientist and Dr. S K Mishra respectively wer very insightful for the trainees. Apart from that, demonstration on High Volume Air sampler, Noise meter, GPS provide basic insight about air sampling and analysis. The last day, the trainees were skilled about water (pH, EC, hardness, potassium heavy metals etc.) and soil (pH, EC, texture, heavy metals etc.) analysis. Trainees were given some hands on sessions for selected parameters. Microbiological training spread for all three days regarding medial preparation, sterilisation, serial dilution, inoculations and microbial counting etc. The trainees were also taught about lab safety, good lab practices, NABL etc. All the CSIR-IMMT NABL team members Dr. A Manjhi, Dr. Sony Pandey, Dr. Manish Kumar, Dr. R Boopathy, Dr. R Sathish, Dr. D R Satpathy were deeply involved during the skill development training program. On the concluding day, the trainees received their certificate from Prof. S Basu, Director, CSIR-IMMT.

On the concluding day Dr. Swati Mohanty, Head, HRD addressed the trainees. The training program organised under the aegis of CSIR Skill Development Mission. Training program targets development of human resource, who will be contributing towards the growing manpower requirement in environmental analytics field. The skill development program is co-ordinated by Dr. N K Dhal, Head, and Dr. Manish Kumar, Senior Scientist of Environment & Sustainability Department, CSIR-IMMT, Bhubaneswar.
