Workshop cum Brainstorming Session on Sustainable Approaches to Mitigate Enviornmental Issues in Eastern India 6th - 7th February 2019

CSIR-Institute of Minerals and Materials Technology (CSIR-IMMT), Bhubaneswar in collaboration with National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (CSIR-NEERI), Nagpur had organised a workshop cum brainstorming session on “Sustainable Approaches to Mitigate Environmental Issues in Eastern India” during 6th &7th February 2019 at CSIR-IMMT. The programme was intended to bring in the facilities and expertise of the two premier institutes to identify and address the environmental needs of the state Odisha. And it was also to provide a forum for discussion on various issue related to environment through key note lectures by eminent persons from industries, consultancy organizations, academic and R&D institutes. The identified theme areas were (a) Water, wastewater/mine water treatment studies (b) Solid and hazardous waste management (c) Environmental Impact assessment (EIA) studies.

 

On the first day, the workshop was inaugurated by the Chief Guest, Ms. Roopa Mishra, IAS, Director, Drinking water and Sanitation, Panchayathi Raj and Drinking Water Department, Govt. of Odisha, and the Guest of Honour Dr. R.K. Dey, Addl. Principal Chief, MoEFCC, Bhubaneswar in the presence of Prof. S. Basu, Director, CSIR-IMMT, Bhubaneswar and Dr. Rakesh Kumar, Director, CSIR-NEERI, Nagpur. The scientists from CSIR-IMMT and CSIR-NEERI interacted through selected presentations followed by the panel discussions. The Director and the scientists of NEERI had visited various departments of IMMT and interacted with the scientists.

 

Brain Storming Programme was conducted on the second day under three themes; Opportunities for Technology Scale-ups for environmental management, Water/Wastewater and Air Quality Management, Pollution Control Prospects for solid wastes and possible management strategies and finally concluded with “Ask the expert” Session. Shri. Debidutta Biswal, IFS, Member Secretary, State Pollution Control Board, Odisha and Prof. U.C. Mohanty, Emeritus Professor, Indian Institute of Technology, Bhubaneswar kick started the program with their inaugural addresses. Around forty delegates from SPCB, BMC, Director of Industries, MoEF (Odisha Branch), PPT, SAIL, TATA Steel, NALCO, Odisha Livelihood Mission (DWD, Govt of Odisha), Chilka Development Authority, Costal Development Authorities, , Xavier University, and IIT, Bhubaneswar etc. were participated. Dr. R.K. Dey, MoEFCC,; Prof. B. N. Thorat, Director, ICT Bhubaneswar; Mr. R. L. Mohanty, President-Eastern Zone Mining Association; Dr. C R. Panda (Former Chief Scientist, CSIR-IMMT); Dr Rajiv Bhirud, GM Research and Development, HRI Ltd, Mumbai and the Directors of IMMT and NEERI acted as panelists during the two day sessions. The key note lectures were delivered by Prof. B. N. Thorat, Dr. Elizabeth Abba, Associate Professor, Sustainability, XIB, and Shri Bhabani Shankar Chayani (OAS (SAG), Member Enforcement, BDA, Bhubaneswar-Smart City Project.
