Celebration of National Science Day 2019 28th February 2019


National Science Day 2019 was celebrated on February 28 with enthusiasm at CSIR-IMMT, Bhubaneswar. An invited lecture by Prof. Omkar Nath Mohanty, Director-Technology & Academic Initiative at RSB Group and Former VC, BPUT was organized. In the welcome address, Prof. S. Basu, Director of the institute, highlighted the importance of R&D in the progress of the nation and introduced the chief guest. Prof. Omkar Nath Mohanty delivered his National Science Day lecture on "Indian Heritage in Iron: The Iron Pillars Of India".

He presented on four iron pillars of India viz. Delhi Iron Pillar (DIP); Dhar and Mandu Iron Pillars in Madhya Pradesh and the iron pillar of Kodachadri in Karnataka are known to exist. They belong to different historical times. He informed that the iron and steel heritage of India spans three millennia. The Wootz steel was being produced in India since ancient times, and tens of thousand tonnes are known to be exported to middle-east countries. Highly sought-after and dreaded swords, known as Damascus Swords were being fashioned out of the Wootz steel both within and outside India.
