National Science Day, 28th February 2018

National Science Day is celebrated every year to commemorate the discovery of Raman effect way back in 1928 and to create awareness about the role of science in our daily life and generate scientific temper within ourselves. This year’s National Science Day was celebrated at CSIR-Institute of Minerals and Materials Technology, Bhubaneswar on February 28, 2018 with wide participation from the CSIR-IMMT community. A meeting was organized in this regard at the Meeting hall and Prof. S. Basu, Director, CSIR-IMMT, Bhubaneswar delivered his welcome remarks to the enthusiastic audience gathered. Following this Prof. Ajit Mohan Srivastava, Professor, Institute of Physics, Bhubaneswar and the chief guest of the evening delivered a popular lecture on “Our Universe, Elementary Particles and Dark Energy”. He talked about the extremely large universe where on one end we have massive objects like galaxies, clusters of galaxies etc. On the other extreme of sizes are elementary particles, so tiny that huge accelerators are built to study their micro properties through collision of particles. He discussed about the evolution of the Universe as understood using Einstein's General Theory of Relativity. Research in this area has brought out a startling revelation, that it is not possible to study the extremely large structure of the universe without understanding the properties of elementary particles, and their interactions. His talk explained the physical basis for this surprising interconnection and the concept of Dark Energy, an exotic form of energy leading to repulsive gravity.Extensive discussions followed even after the talk was over with everyone carrying home thought provoking ideas about the wonders of the Universe with them.
