Public Lecture by Padma Vibhushan Dr. R. A. Mashelkar, F.R.S. on the theme “Technology in Tomorrow’s World” on 6th January 2015

Padma Vibhushan Dr. R. A. Mashelkar, F.R.S., who is presently CSIR Bhatnagar Fellow & National Research Professor; Chairman, Academy of Scientific & Industrial Research; and the President, Global Research Alliance, visited CSIR-Institute of Minerals & Materials Technology, Bhubaneswar on 6.1.2015, to deliver a Public Lecture on the theme “Technology in Tomorrow’s World”. The lecture was well attended by many invitees from different academic and R&D institutions of Bhubaneswar as well as members of the CSIR-IMMT family. Dr. Mashelkar advocated for technology development that delivers excellence at an affordable cost, so as to deliver more performance from less resources for more people (MLM based inclusive innovation paradigm). He also emphasized the need to integrate and converge various innovation processes in technology, business model, organizational structure, workflow, research process, system delivery and policy in order to achieve the goal of inclusive innovation and sustainability. Thirdly he emphasized that merely being affordable does not mean the technology has to be obsolete or with low end performance. Rather it demands next-generation high science based technology to make a product conform to the MLM paradigm. Thus he mentioned the three mantras of innovation to be "Inclusive-Integrative-&-Disruptive". He also outlined 12 emerging technology areas that have huge disruptive potential and advised CSIR to identify R&D programmes that can have similar impact.
